The test result separates dangerous, major and advisory items. Dangerous defects should be treated seriously; a car should not be driven on the road with dangerous defects.
An old MOT may still have time left
If you tested the car before the existing certificate expired, that certificate may still be current. That doesn't make an unsafe car safe to drive, and dangerous defects remain a separate issue.
There are limited journeys without a current MOT. The law allows certain journeys connected with a pre-arranged MOT test or repairs in specific circumstances. It is not a general permission to keep using an untested car normally.
Insurance still matters
An MOT failure doesn't automatically cancel every policy, but insurance doesn't make an unroadworthy vehicle lawful to use. Check your policy if the car’s roadworthiness is in doubt.
Use the failure as a repair list
Ask the garage to explain what needs doing now, what is advisory and whether related work makes sense while parts are already dismantled. That is more useful than treating every line as equally urgent.
