What do I need to do when selling a car privately?

Private sales are not complicated, but there are a few jobs worth doing properly: payment, the V5C, insurance, keys and a written record of the handover.

Describe the car accurately

Don't make claims about condition or history that you can't support. If there is a known fault, hiding it rarely improves matters once the buyer discovers it.

Be careful with test drives. Check that the prospective buyer is licensed and properly insured to drive the car. Do not rely on somebody simply saying that their policy covers any car.

Keep control of keys and documents

Don't hand over every key, the V5C and the car while payment is still uncertain. Be cautious about unusual overpayment arrangements or a buyer who wants to rush the process.

Confirm the money is really there

For bank transfers, check your own account rather than relying on a screenshot or message shown by the buyer.

Tell DVLA about the change of keeper. Complete the change-of-keeper process promptly and keep confirmation. Your tax does not pass to the buyer, and you should deal with your own insurance once the vehicle has gone.
