When is temporary car insurance useful?

Short-term cover can be useful when you only need a car for a day or a few weeks. It is convenient, but it is not automatically the cheapest answer and it still needs to match the way the car will be used.

People use temporary cover when borrowing a car, sharing a long drive, collecting a vehicle, using a family member’s car for a few days or needing an extra driver for a limited period.

Check what is actually covered

Short-term policies can differ from annual policies. Look at the level of cover, excess, territorial limits, permitted use and any age or vehicle restrictions before buying.

Adding a driver may be another option

If the car already has an annual policy, the existing insurer may be willing to add another driver temporarily. That isn't always cheaper, but it is worth comparing the practical differences.

Do not assume instant means immediate. Even where a policy can be bought online, check the exact start date and time shown on the certificate or confirmation. A purchase receipt on its own does not tell you that cover has already begun.

Short-term cover is still insurance

The information you provide needs to be accurate. Claims, convictions, licence details, ownership and intended use can all matter, just as they do with an annual policy.
