Experience matters
A newly qualified driver has a short driving record and no long history for an insurer to assess. Claims experience across similar drivers also affects pricing.
The car can make a large difference
Engine performance, repair costs, theft experience and insurance grouping can all change the quote. A car that looks modest isn't always cheap to insure.
Telematics can suit some drivers. Black-box or app-based policies may offer another route for some young motorists, but read the rules carefully. Mileage limits, driving-time restrictions or scoring methods can matter just as much as the initial premium.
Do not put a parent down as the main driver if they are not
If the young person is really the main user of the car, saying that a parent is the main driver simply to reduce the price can amount to fronting.
Build a record gradually
A year of claim-free driving can help, but there is no guaranteed percentage reduction. Each renewal is a fresh quotation based on the driver, car and market at that time.
